“The way we see the problem is the problem” – Steven Covey

This quote is EVERYTHING when it comes to chronic symptoms. This quote offers us a window into how we’ve been reacting to the stuff of life. In the case of pain, we often naturally relate to the pain as if it were an enemy, as if it were something to be eradicated, excommunicated, even executed!

When we get frustrated with the pain on a habitual level, we keep the fight or flight mechanism engaged in response to this stressful reaction – we kick and scream about what is happening in our bodies, and we feel victimized, afflicted. Yes, pain and symptoms suck, and we can let them suck for a bit, but then it’s time to turn toward it in a way that is more productive, in a way that turns OFF our fight/flight response.

One way we can begin to shift the way we relate to pain is through having a dialogue with our symptoms. We can begin to ask our symptoms curious questions, ask it what messages it has for us, and in doing this, we soften our relationship with the symptoms themselves.
